Community-based Forest Management

Strategizing for the future: exploring goals

Working together under the banner of the global caucus on community based forest management we were successful in influencing government delegates at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development to:

“Recognize and support indigenous and community based forest management systems to ensure their full and effective participation in sustainable forest management.”

43(h) WSSD Plan of Implementation, 2002

Goal:

To create political spaces to advance community based forest management at the local, national and global level.

Objectives:

  • Support grassroots movements at the national level and in all regions of the world.
  • Contribute to the elimination of rural poverty and increase environmental protection.
  • Increase organizational capacity of local people in managing responsibilities resulting from devolution of power.
  • Create strategic alliances and coalitions with other national/international movements related with social justice (i.e. land reform).
  • Influence national legislation and policies for the promotion of national subsidies for community base forest management.
  • Organize forests cooperatives based on CBFM focused on local consumption.
