Open letter to the members of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

More than 300 organizations around the world give a clear message against the expansion of monoculture tree plantations, agrofuels and GE trees.

The open letter sent to members of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (also available in Spanish, French and Portuguese) is being distributed during the Conference of the Parties in Bonn, Germany from 19 to 30 May 2008.

In 1992 governments committed themselves to a new type of development -which they defined as “sustainable”- which would prevent the negative environmental impacts of the until then prevailing development model and agreed on a Convention for the protection of biodiversity (CBD)

After 16 years biodiversity continues to disappear in forests, grasslands and wetlands.

This story can be changed!!! But the outcome will depend on civil society’s capacity to counter corporate influence and to put peoples’ needs on the CBD agenda.
