Moratorium on new logging announced

Hon. Sir. Mekere Morauta, MP
Prime Minister for Papua New Guinea

February 1st 2000

Dear Sir:

I am writing to you on behalf of the World Rainforest Movement. The WRM is a global network of citizens' groups of North and South involved in efforts to defend the world's rainforests against the forces that destroy them. It works to secure the lands and livelihoods of forest peoples and supports their efforts to defend the forests from commercial logging, dams, mining, plantations, shrimp farms, colonisation and settlement and other projects that threaten them.

We are addressing you to express our support to the recent step that the PNG Government has taken regarding the intention to impose a moratorium on new logging and the review the existing logging concessions.

We would like to highlight that it is very important to implement the moratorium, and not to undercut with exceptions or weak implementations, as has happened with a previous moratorium in the early 1990s.

Looking forward to hearing good news from Papua.

Sincerely;
