Regional and IPOs Processes

The global workshop (18 to 22 January 1999) on the global and regional underlying causes and their relationship to national underlying causes was preceded by a comprehensive consultation process in seven different regions ( Africa, Asia, CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), Latin America, North America, Oceania / Pacific and Europe ).

Indigenous Peoples’ Organizations (IPOs) were actively involved in all regional processes. Also, a separate workshop for IPOs was organized before the global workshop to discuss the results of the various regional processes.

These processes included the preparation and collection of case-studies on the underlying causes of deforestation and forest degradation in the various regions. A set of guidelines for the selection of case studies and for the organization of the workshop was discussed and approved by the initiative.

These case studies have been discussed at the regional and IPO workshops and the results of this process and a selection of case studies have been presented to the Global Workshop in Costa Rica.
