RECOMA
representatives from 15 Latin American countries met in Uruguay
to lay out strategies to curb the advance of monoculture tree
plantations in the region.
The appropriation
of land by large corporations, the worsening of poverty, the scant
generation of jobs, rural exodus, the violation of human rights,
the disappearance and pollution of water, the loss of biodiversity
and the impoverishment of soils among other issues, were addressed
during the meeting.
The members of
the Network prepared a Declaration
synthesizing the reasons for their decision to step up the struggle
against monoculture tree plantations, linking it
to other processes on a regional level such as those of the indigenous,
Afro-descendent, traditional and peasant farmer peoples, rural
workers, landless people and women’s organizations. RECOMA
has taken up defence of food sovereignty, of land and territories,
of forests, biodiversity and water.
