Declarations
against the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
In defence of Human Rights, Food Sovereignty
October 2008
At the end of
September, a meeting of civil society organisations from North
and South (Alternative Network against Impunity and Market Globalisation)
was held in Udine, Italy. During that meeting, strong concern
about and criticism against the forthcoming first Latin American
conference of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) were
expressed. That conference will take place on 16th and 17th October
in Cartagena, Colombia.
Colombian organisations
denounce the human rights violations made by agribusiness interests,
and consider the RSPO to be an attempt to 'greenwash' territorial
occupation and growing poverty amongst local communities.
The organisations
of the Alterantive Network formulated
a declaration (also available in french)
against the RSPO's greenwashing of the palm oil industry and in
support of
the colombian social and environmental organisations.
If your organisation
wishes to sign this declaration or for questions and comments
about it, please send an email with the name of the organisation

The declaration
will be sent on 13 October, but it will be open after that date
for further signatures. Please forward this declaration to others
who may be interested.
