In this publication the Indonesian organisation Walhi denounces the country’s government classification of the floods and landslides that heavily struck Aceh, North and West Sumatra in December 2025 as a ´natural disaster´. For many years, Walhi has been alerting how the, up to now, 1.4 million hectares of deforestation in these areas to enable profit-driven corporate and unrestrained expansion of logging; industrial oil palm plantations; mineral, metal and geothermal mining; and hydropower dams, all legalized by the government, is directly connected to this disaster that resulted in a death toll of more than 1,000 people.
