Trade Agreements

Capital accumulation and trade agreements are, arguably, the most invisible underlying cause of deforestation. Promoting trade in, for example, agricultural commodities and products leads to greater deforestation; and the impacts on forests and forest-dependent communities can be huge. Trade agreement negotiations also tend to take place secretly, which in turn limits public scrutiny.
