The underlying causes of deforestation tend to be hidden from view, less discussed and poorly understood. WRM seeks to understand them from the perspective of communities, highlighting how they are related to the direct drivers of deforestation, such as logging or mining. The main underlying causes are tied to the capitalist-racist-patriarchal system and the colonial legacy: the FAO’s definition of forests, excessive consumption, the Green Economy and false solutions to climate chaos, conservationism and trade agreements, the legalized theft of lands, and biopiracy.
