The Green Economy
The Green Economy is a tactic used to “clean up” the image of corporations rather than address corporate capture and capitalism as the true drivers of deforestation. False solutions promoted under the Green Economy include certification, sustainable forest management, ecosystem services, REDD+, the bioeconomy, nature-based climate solutions, and zero net deforestation. Rather than stopping it, these “solutions” support corporate-driven destruction that is causing a deep social and ecological crisis.

For decades, governments and intergovernmental agencies like the UN or the World Bank have been busy finding ways to allow the flow of large investments and projects to go on – no matter the consequences. Despite fossil fuels being the main cause of climate change, we see oil, coal and gas companies expanding extraction activities. Despite land clearance for industrial agriculture being one of the main causes of deforestation, we see agribusinesses increasing tree and crop monocultures.

In 2013, the Rapporteur on human rights to the environment (RDHMA, for its Portuguese acronym), from the DhESCA Platform, conducted a Research and Advocacy Mission in the state of Acre on the green economy problematic and its political and territorial effects. Different state governments, especially in the Amazon, have already established or are in the process of defining state policies contemplating proposals for payments for environmental services and REDD+. Acre is one of the pioneers.
