On 19 February 2008, a large number of civil society organizations sent an open letter to the Convention on Biological Diversity's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice, currently meeting in Rome, expressing their "deep concern" about genetic engineering of trees.
February, 2008 The undersigned, members of organizations from countries where research on the genetic modification of trees is being carried out, or has been recently, would like to express in this letter some of the reasons of our deep concern.
The Thirteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice will be held in FAO, Rome, Italy (18 - 22  february 2008). Forest biodiversity will be one of the main items on the agenda.

The undersigned participants of SBSTTA or of meetings leading up to SBSTTA wish to share their concerns about the issue of genetically modified trees within the process of the Convention of Biological Diversity.
